After an accident at home led to a hospital stay, I knew I needed rehabilitation before I could safely return to my normal routine. Friends familiar with the Cedar Rapids area spoke highly of Harmony Cedar Rapids, and because I was originally from the area, it felt like the right choice.
When I arrived, I had several goals in mind.
I wanted to build strength in my arms and hands, improve my mobility, and work on my legs, which had become increasingly difficult to move because of neuropathy and other health challenges. For years, there were things I simply couldn’t do anymore.
The therapy team listened.
They took the time to learn about my limitations, understand my goals, and develop a plan that focused on what mattered most to me. They challenged me, encouraged me, and never gave up on me—even when I wasn’t sure what was possible.
One achievement stands out above all the others.
For years, I had been unable to lift one of my legs on my own.
Years.
The therapists worked with me consistently, focusing on strengthening exercises and movements that I honestly wasn’t sure would make a difference. But they believed I could improve, and little by little, I started seeing progress.
Then one day, I lifted my leg by myself.
I still remember how amazed I felt.
It was something I never expected to see happen again in my lifetime. Even now, I’m continuing the exercises they taught me, and I still use the resistance bands they sent home with me because I want to keep building on that success.
That accomplishment alone exceeded every expectation I had for rehabilitation.
What made the experience even better was the people.
The therapists were wonderful. They kept me engaged, explained what we were working on, and found ways to make therapy enjoyable. While we exercised, they talked with me like a friend, helping me stay focused on the conversation instead of the difficulty of the workout.
The nursing staff was equally caring and supportive. Everyone treated me with kindness, respect, and patience.
What I appreciated most was the atmosphere throughout the building. Staff members greeted residents in the hallways, checked in on us throughout the day, and made sure we felt included. They encouraged participation in activities, invited residents to games and social events, and created an environment that felt more like a community than a rehabilitation center.
Whether it was bingo, exercise groups, puzzles, books, crafts, or other activities, there was always something available for residents to enjoy.
Looking back, I don’t just remember the therapy. I remember how people made me feel.
They made me feel seen, supported, and capable.
If someone asked me whether I would recommend Harmony Cedar Rapids, my answer would be absolutely yes. The staff was kind, the therapy was outstanding, and they helped me accomplish something I never thought I would be able to do again.
For that, I will always be grateful.
